Into the dark

I've never really been a huge fan of Death Cab for Cutie. In fact, until I heard this cover of what is arguably one of their most widely known tracks, I really hadn't listened to them at all. After hearing the cover, I figured that I should probably do my best to give Death Cab at least a little bit of my time. I was pleasantly surprised.

As happens with a music library of 21,000 songs, stuff disappears within the machine. That happened with Death Cab after I took some time to give their stuff a listen.

I was listening to CBC Radio 3 this afternoon when a more recent cover of "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" came on. This rendition was courtesy of Amy Millan. I had never heard of her and I had never heard her cover, but I instantly fell in love with it. It also reminded me of the time when I first discovered Death Cab.

Here is the very first cover that I heard of "I Will Follow You Into the Dark." It was the song that pushed me towards giving Death Cab the time in my ears that they deserved.

Hayley Legg is an acoustic singer from Australia. I discovered her on YouTube and I think that, at least outside of Australia, that is where she has achieved the majority of success. I really think she has a beautiful voice and that is part of what really blew me away when I heard this song.

I Will Follow You Into the Dark by Hayley Legg
Love of mine, some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands grasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me
"Son fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back
If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about
Because we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms
If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark
